On December 2nd, Dr. Hu Hao, Deputy Director-General of China Center for Contemporary World Studies (CCCWS) held a discussion with the delegation from the Library of the First President of Kazakhstan (LFPK) led by Mr. Timur Shaimergenov, Vice Director of the Library. Issues like China-Kazakhstan relations, Central Asian situation and cooperation among think tanks were covered.

Mr. Timur Shaimergenov noted that Kazakhstan values relations with China, its reliable partner. Kazakhstan and China should build upon existing exchanges and enhance direct dialogues between scholars, civil communities and businesses so as to realize common interests and tackle challenges together. He also pointed out that the two countries should, in particular, step up cooperation within the framework of Shanghai Cooperation Organization and push the SCO mechanism to a higher level. Concerning Central Asian situation, Mr. Shaimergenov said, from Kazakhstan’s side, the American presence is ineligible in Central Asia as the US has clear strategies in this area and will keep its military presence here. On cooperation between think tanks in Kazakhstan and China, he expressed strong emphasis on cooperative relationship with CCCWS and willingness to build it more regular and mechanism-based.

Dr. Hu Hao agreed with the opinions held by the delegation and pointed out that Kazakhstan is an important neighboring country of China and China always commits itself to good neighborliness with Kazakhstan. China will not compete with any countries for influence in Central Asia or seek dominance here. China would like to take the opportunities brought along by the Silk Road Economic Belt and work together with Kazakhstan to realize common development and prosperity. In this way, the two neighbors can fuse a community of responsibility, interests and destiny, and fruits bore by bilateral cooperation can benefit people in the two countries. On cooperation between think tanks, Dr. Hu Hao expressed that CCCWS wanted to enhance relationship and when possible, to sign cooperation MOUs with the Library. The two institutions can make contributions jointly to the implementation of Silk Road Economic Belt by discussing setting up a network of think tank cooperation on the Belt.

Attendant at the discussion are also Ms. Mou Hong, Research Fellow of CCCWS, Mr. Zheng Dongchao, Associate Research Fellow of CCCWS, Ms. Nie Shengquan, Assistant Researcher of CCCWS, Ms. Marian Abisheva, Director at the Department of Geopolitics and Regional Studies of LFPK and LFPK Researcher Mr. Adil Kaukenov.
