CCCWS Deputy Director-General Hu Hao holds discussions with an Indian scholar

On the afternoon of September 24th in Beijing, CCCWS Deputy Director-General Hu Hao held discussions with Poonam Surie, writer and scholar of Indian Council of World Affairs. The two sides exchanged in-depth views on the topic of “Confucianism and Contemporary China”.

Dr. Hu Hao said that Confucianism has played a significant role in the history and social development of China. Although it has been wrongly interpreted and criticized for several times in modern history, it has become the thought genes of a nation, has been demonstrated in the daily code of conduct for the Chinese, and has deeply influenced China’s foreign policy, as. The foreign policies and ideas of “the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence”, “Building Friendship and Partnership with neighboring countries” and “Harmonious World” are all rooted in the Confucianism such as “Seeking common ground while putting aside differences”, “Peace is precious” and “with good intention toward others”. Ms. Surie agreed with Dr. Hu on his comments about Confucianism. She said that both India and China have great and profound historical culture, scholars from all over the world should dig out and mix together the essences of different cultures, and make contributions to the world peace and development and human progress.

 

The two sides also exchanged views on topics such as the development of Taoism, Buddhism and Islamism in China, China-India cultural exchanges and so on. Also present at the discussions are CCCWS scholars Mou Hong, Gao Lianjia and Lin Yongliang.
