CHINA CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY WORLD STUDIES

On May 21^st, CCCWS staged the second of its lecture series titled the Contemporary World and China. Ms. Sun Haiyan, Director General of CCCWS, presided over the lecture, which focused on China’s public diplomacy through the prism of President Xi’s visit to EU. The guest of today’s lecture was Prof. Jan Melissen, Research Director, Netherlands Institute of International Relations “Clingendael.

Prof. Jan Melissen speaks highly of President Xi’s visit, which has met with ready response from various sectors of the EU. President Xi’s Charm Offensive, from his dress to his addresses, covers the whole spectrum of public diplomacy, conveying the self-confidence and friendliness of China while contributing to easing the EU’s Cold-War suspicions towards China.

In the ensuing free discussions, the two sides exchange views on how to boost China’s public diplomacy in EU.
