2012 BRICS Think-Tank Forum Opens, Intelligence Supports Pragmatic Cooperation

On Sep. 26 in Chongqing, 2012 BRICS Think-Tank Forum entitled “Adjustment, Innovation, Cooperation” (Chongqing) was opened. During the two-day meeting, more than 60 scholars from China, Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa gathered in the Mountain City (Chongqing) to make speeches and suggestions. They offered intelligence support for promoting pragmatic cooperation and mechanism construction among BRICS.

 

The forum was co-hosted by CCCWS, China Foundation for Peace and Development and Chongqing municipality. Ai Ping, Executive Chair of CCCWS Council, pointed out in his opening address that cluster-like emergence of BRICS enriched the world development model, and displayed the vitality and huge development potential of the emerging economies. As the meeting mechanism among BRICS has been gradually improved, their mutual political trust has been continuously strengthened, and their communication and coordination in important international affairs have also got improved.

 

Mr. Ai Ping said that the BRICS Think-Tank Forum has been one of the cooperative channels that has existed for the longest time and has accumulated the richest experience. It has made necessary contribution to promoting deep cooperation of BRICS in the field of politics, economy, security, humanity and science technology. At present, the shadow of international financial crisis has not dispersed. And recovery of the world economy has been in lack of energy, and encountered many new challenges. The scholars and experts from think tanks of BRICS gather again and discuss the plans for BRICS cooperation and development. He expressed his hope that everyone could speak out freely, exchange views frankly, learn from each other, and construct jointly. Thus the Forum could become a thought base and policy factory to promote deep cooperation and faster development of BRICS.

 

At the opening ceremony, heads of delegations from Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa made their speeches separately. They said they would give full play to the role of the Think-Tank Forum, and promote cooperation and learn from each other’s experiences among BRICS, so as to make contributions to common prosperity.

 

On Mar. 2012, the Fourth BRICS Leaders Meeting held in India passed Delhi Declaration which stated: “We have considered the possibility of setting up a new Development Bank for mobilizing resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging economies and developing countries, to supplement the existing efforts of multilateral and regional financial institutions for global growth and development”. The Forum focused on the possibility of building BRICS Development Bank.

 

Participants at the Forum centered their discussions on the following two topics: “The Adjustment of Development Model of BRICS in the Background of International Financial Crisis”, and “Further Promoting Economic and Trade Cooperation among BRICS”. Mr. Huang Huaguang, Executive Council-Member of CCCWS, Mr. Zhou Yuyun, Council-Member of CCCWS, Mr. Ji Ping, Deputy SecretaryGeneral of China Foundation for Peace and Development, Dr. Hu Hao, Deputy Director-General of CCCWS, and Dr. Yang Hongxi, Research Fellow of CCCWS took part in the Forum.
